As a GHF Ambassador, I recently had the great pleasure of attending the EdRev (Education Revolution) conference at AT&T park in San Francisco. It was an entire day dedicated to supporting children who learn differently, many of whom are gifted and twice-exceptional (2e). I must have talked to nearly one hundred families with gifted children who had recently been diagnosed with learning differences like dyslexia and dysgraphia.
Most of the families had children who had been kicked out of multiple schools or bullied to a point where traditional school didn’t feel like a safe option. They homeschool out of necessity, not choice. These were loving, intelligent families who were taken aback by the lack of educational options for their children. Even at the conference itself, there were many professionals and organizations that serve 2e families, but there were few school representatives.
Every parent I talked to wanted to know one thing: “Where is the school for a child like mine?”
Unfortunately, I only had a couple of directions to point them in, because schools that cater to 2e families are beyond rare. The phrase “needle in a haystack” doesn’t even begin to cover it.
Of course, my mind immediately jumped to micro-schools as the solution to this problem. Gifted and twice-exceptional students often struggle to fit in traditional classrooms, and full-time homeschooling is rarely an option. A micro-school can offer personalized learning in a school-like setting led by instructors who understand the nuances and needs of gifted and 2e kids.
As many of you know, my book Micro-Schools: Creating Personalized Learning on a Budget was released through GHF Press in January. Nearly every day since its publication, I have heard from readers how my book has helped them see what is possible for their children. It’s been a humbling experience, and I have come to realize that many families are ready to create an educational environment that is thoughtful, creative, and inclusive.
To this end, I’m excited to announce that this summer, I will be offering the Build Your Micro-School Summer Institute. We will cover everything you need to build your own micro-school—all in the three months before school would start!
If you have ever dreamt of creating your own program catering to gifted and 2e families, this is the program for you! The Build Your Micro-School Summer Institute is a three-month online course packed with guidance and information on creating your own innovative learning environment. Each week I’ll host live calls with instructions, information, and hands-on help for each participant, and I’ll have additional open office hours each month. Together we’ll set goals and create lists of outlined action steps. You’ll have lifetime, 24/7 access to a community of peers who share your dream.
We’ll work together through nine detailed and directive modules designed to help you, including:
- Understanding what your time and cost commitment will be
- Developing a system to delegate responsibilities
- Curating curriculum and resources in a way that works for your budget
- Finding your community through GHF and other outlets.
I’m capping the inaugural class at just 10 participants, and I only have a few spots left. Head over to buildyourmicroschool.com to learn more. Enrollment is open now.
Families with 2e children, your schools are coming, faster than you ever thought possible.
